A Brief history
The Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja was founded by the Asociación Marista Ecuatoriana (AME) on May 3, 1971. It is officially recognized by the Ecuadorian Government under Executive Decree Number 646, published in the Official Registry Number 217 on May 5, 1971. Under this decree, it became an autonomous legal entity under the agreement of “Modus Vivendi”, held between the Holy See and Ecuador, according to the rules which organize and govern the Church.
UTPL is an autonomous institution, with social and public purpose, able to provide education, to carry out research with scientific and administra- tive freedom, to participate in the country’s development plans, and to give, recognize and revalidate academic degrees and professional titles, as well as to carry out activities necessary to accomplish its goals.
On October 27, 1997, the Diocese of Loja transferd, for an undefined amount of time, the adminstration of the UTPLto the Institute of Cristo Redentor, Misioneros y Misioneras Identes, to manage it with total autonomy in line with the Identespirit.
The UTPL provides higher education for undergraduates and graduates through both On-site and Distance delivery systems, the latter with its variants: a) Traditional Distance Mode, b) Semi-distance Mode, and c) Virtual Mode.
On June 30, 2008, the National Council for Accreditation of Higher Educa- tion in Ecuador (CONEA-Consejo Nacional de Evaluación y Acreditación), accredited the UTPL as a Universidad de Calidad (Quality University). This accreditation recognizes the university improvement programs that the institution includes as a part of its institutional management. Further- more, it highlights the UTPL’s scientific research and its links with the production sector through its Centers of Investigation, Technology Trans- ference, Consulting and Services (CITTES- Centros de Investigación, Technología, Transferencia, Extensión, y Servicios).
